28-year-old Abdo, arrived in Sweden from Lebanon in 2022. Through the Competence Center in Täby, he was given the opportunity to intern at the family business Big Image. With previous experience in sewing and haute couture, the sewing department was a natural fit. After completing his internship, he was offered a permanent position and has since advanced to Team Leader.
“I really enjoy working at Big Image. It feels like a family, and I look forward to going to work every day. Being a Team Leader isn’t easy, but I feel that I’ve grown into the role.”
At the same time, another story with a similar starting point, shows how far a first opportunity can lead. Awista Ahmadi, who started at Big Image alongside Abdo, now works at UNICEF’s headquarters in New York.
What matters is what you do – not where you come from
During his visit, Minister for Migration Johan Forssell encountered a workplace where international competence is a natural part of everyday life. With 14 nationalities represented and several women in key positions, Big Image demonstrates how equality and diverse experiences can strengthen an organization.
“At Big Image, there is a strong culture of openness and trust. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from – the important thing is the contribution you make. For us, integration is about recognizing competence and valuing different experiences. That means giving people the conditions they need to succeed,” says Group CEO Johanna Schäfer.
The visit followed a stop at Täby Municipality’s Competence Center and was part of a broader dialogue on the labor market and integration.
